Threshold Bipower Variation and the Impact of Jumps on Volatility Forecasting∗

This study reconsiders the role of jumps for volatility forecasting by showing that jumps have a positive and mostly significant impact on future volatility. This result becomes apparent once volatility is separated into its continuous and discontinuous component using estimators which are not only consistent, but also scarcely plagued by small-sample bias. To this purpose, we introduce the con...

Efficient and feasible inference for the components of financial variation using blocked multipower variation

High frequency financial data allows us to learn more about volatility and jumps. One of the key techniques developed in the literature in recent years has been bipower variation and its multipower extension, which estimates time-varying volatility robustly to jumps. We improve the scope and efficiency of biand multipower variation by the use of a more sophisticated exploitation of high frequen...

Estimation of Continuous-Time Stochastic Volatility Models with Jumps using High-Frequency Data∗

This paper proposes a method of inference for general stochastic volatility models containing price jumps. The estimation is based on treating realized multipower variation statistics calculated from high-frequency data as their unobservable (fill-in) asymptotic limits. The paper provides easy-to-check conditions under which the error in estimation resulting from this approximation is op(1) and...

Volatility forecasting: the jumps do matter∗†

This study reconsiders the role of jumps for volatility forecasting by showing that jumps have a positive and mostly significant impact on future volatility. This result becomes apparent once volatility is correctly separated into its continuous and discontinuous component. To this purpose, we introduce the concept of threshold multipower variation (TMPV), which is based on the joint use of bip...

Jump-Robust Volatility Estimation using Nearest Neighbor Truncation

We propose two new jump-robust estimators of integrated variance based on high-frequency return observations. These MinRV and MedRV estimators provide an attractive alternative to the prevailing bipower and multipower variation measures. Specifically, the MedRV estimator has better theoretical efficiency properties than the tripower variation measure and displays better finitesample robustness ...
